| Happy Father's Day to all the dads, soon-to-be dads, stepdads, granddads, etc. It's a nice sunny day and perfect for having a cookout, picnic or day at the beach. Or just to laze about the house doing nothing much (my preferred choice). Think I'll do a little writing and maybe a little reading, because tomorrow it's back to the old grind. But hey, it's a short week so I'll have a nice long weekend. My brother-in-law John has surgery Wednesday afternoon on his spine. I'm praying and visualizing a successful surgery and a speedy recovery for him. I know he's worried as he's had relatively few surgeries in his life and none at all in the last few years. His sister and her hubby will drive up here on Monday and stay for awhile. I know that will provide a pleasant distraction for him in the next few days. I'll do my part to keep Audrey from worrying. Off to do some writing now! Wishing you all a good day. | | |
| Okay, I'm crazy. I know it, but Boy am I ever enjoying going to the Citizen's Police Academy. Last Saturday night, I had a great ride-along with a Grand Rapids police officer for 12 hours. I understand, some of my family were offering certain cops coffee and donuts for a photo of me in a Kevlar vest, but that was NOT going to happen. The ride-along was informative, a real adrenaline rush, and I'll admit a bit scary at times – notably going lights and sirens down 28th street at 85 miles hours to assist an officer in trouble. Believe me, when we got there, hearing the words on the radio “Get down, get down, He’s got a gun!” were not what I wanted to hear. Especially since our class last week taught us that the stuff you see on TV where the cops shelter behind a car is pretty much B.S. The only spot on a normal car, van or SUV that will stop a round is an 8” section of the engine block. Otherwise, a round will pretty much go right through a car door, passenger compartment, and exit the other door without slowing down. Thankfully, Tony (the cop I rode with) had parked down the block as part of an 8-car perimeter the cops had formed to cordon off the 4-block area, so I was pretty safe. Close enough to observe the action, but still pretty much out of harm’s way. They did get the guy – a crack cocaine user who was carrying a chunk slightly smaller than a golf ball! I got to see them field test the drug then we transported the guy. First, to Metro hospital to check his bruises then on to the Kent County Correctional Facility (aka jail). That whole process was quite an education. Made me realize just how sheltered my life has been. And thank God it has. All in all, Tony responded to 19 different calls that night. Between calls, he answered pages of questions I had about the GRPD and police procedurals in general. Quite the night. When I got home at 7 a.m. Sunday morning, I crashed. Class this week had two undercover hunks (I mean officers) from the Vice Squad, who brought about a quarter million dollars worth of seized drugs for us to see. Then a lecture and demo by the K-9 team. Both segments were awesome. God, I'm going to hate it when the classes are over! | | |
| I keep trying to remember all the reasons why I love Michigan... I hate this frickin' blizzardy, cold weather. I was really grooving on the semi-balmy winter we had been experiencing up to the week before last. I am a warm-blooded creature. I love sunshine and watching waves lap the shore of a beach. I do not like snow or shoveling. I want a tropical getaway -- or at the very least, a fireplace! Oh well, neither are in the budget so I better get back to work. | | |
| Just visited Xanga to post a couple notes and realized how long it's been since I've posted out here. Geeze, I knew my damn job has eaten my life but this is utterly RIDICULOUS!!! Glad I made the decision to take back my life. I've had so much fun writing every day, and Chel's short story sale has inspired me to keep at it. I've torn the whole thing apart, made the chapters shorter and I hope tauter, and reworked some of the characters. It's kind of an "omigod I can't believe I'm cutting out all this writing" experience, but I'm hoping the end result will prove it worthwhile. Time will tell. My goal is to finish by July. so I can pitch it at Nationals. I know that's a pretty agressive goal, but if I shoot for the moon and miss, I could still hit a star. On that cliche I shall close. ciao! PS: My hunky writer muse is back! | | |
| What a gorgeous, sunny day. Blue skies, puffy clouds, and a hint of summer to come. So much nicer than the gloomy gray skies, ominous clouds, and depressing rain all day yesterday.
What is it with April weather in Michigan? I've lived here most of my life, but still can't understand it. Is there some unwritten rule that says if the day is warm and sunny today you'll need to unpack your boots and umbrella (or snow pants) for tomorrow?
On a different note, I start my three months of classes Monday. Funny how I had been dreading them, but now I am really excited about them. Must have something to do with the fact that my new job will be to mentor others as they learn the systems. It will be 18-24 months of constant movement as I work with different areas of the company, but it should mean a more sane number of hours spent at the wonderful Circle M!
At least I hope so!
